N/02 Field notes

The eight-word brief.

Euphoria came to us eleven days out from a launch with no deck, no script and no treatment. The entire brief was eight words: make me feel euphoria, make me feel euphoric.

That is a worse brief than it sounds and a better one than most. Worse because there is nothing to build against. Better because it names the only thing that actually had to be true.

The feeling goes first, in writing

Before a shot list, before a script, before anyone opens an edit, we agree one sentence describing what it should feel like when it lands, and we write it down. Not a mood board. A sentence.

This sounds like a soft step and it is the hardest constraint on the project. Once that sentence exists, every later argument has somewhere to go. Is this shot euphoric or is it just bright? Does this cut earn the lift or is it noise? You stop arguing about taste and start arguing against a spec.

Skipping this is why films get re-cut. Not because the edit was wrong, but because nobody agreed what right meant.

Then everything else is downstream

With the feeling fixed, the decisions collapse fast. Colour was decided in an hour because we knew what euphoria was not. Tempo followed the same way. Sound was scored to the sentence rather than to picture.

  • Day 1 to 2. Feeling agreed, written, signed off. No production has started.
  • Day 3 to 5. Concept and world. The idea a viewer can repeat.
  • Day 6 to 11. Direction, edit, sound, grade, and the surface cutdowns built alongside the hero rather than after it.
  • Day 12 to 15. It stopped being one film and became a campaign, because once the register is agreed the extra surfaces are not a negotiation.

What it returned

Roughly three hundred thousand views in the first twenty-four hours, no media spend, and a set of assets the team kept using for months after the date. The number is not the interesting part. The interesting part is that a client with nothing but a feeling got further in fifteen days than most do with a full brief and a quarter.

If you have a launch date and nothing else, that is not a problem. Bring the date and one sentence about how it should land. We can work from that.
